Dobri Popov Voynikov was a leading figure of the Bulgarian National Revival whose influence extended across education and cultural life. Born in Shumen in 1833, he showed an early interest in music and literature.
After graduating from a French college in Constantinople, he became a teacher in Shumen. He expanded his pupils' knowledge of history and literature and introduced subjects including Bulgarian history and sight-singing. He formed a student choir and orchestra, which performed a range of works and helped develop local musical culture.
Alongside teaching, Voynikov organised cultural events and participated in public life. His textbooks and works on history and literature helped spread knowledge among Bulgarians.
He was also a playwright and theatre organiser. He established a Bulgarian theatrical company in Brăila and wrote several popular plays, most famously The Misunderstood Civilisation. His theatrical work helped establish Bulgarian drama and remains an important part of the country's cultural heritage.
His life and work were closely connected to the Bulgarian struggle for national liberation and cultural advancement. He died in 1878, but his legacy continued to inspire students, writers and theatre practitioners.
