Period: Ottoman rule

Dobri Petrov Chintulov was a Bulgarian poet, composer and teacher, born in Sliven in 1822. He first attended a Greek school in his home town, then continued his education in Bucharest and Odesa.

After completing the Kherson Theological Seminary in Odesa in 1849, he returned to Bulgaria and began teaching in Sliven. He subsequently took an active part in the struggle for church independence and modern Bulgarian education.

He founded a cultural reading centre in Sliven and wrote widely popular patriotic and revolutionary poems. His work helped inspire revolutionary ideals among young Bulgarians and a broader patriotic awakening.

In 1871, he represented the Sliven diocese at the First Bulgarian Church and National Council in Constantinople. He then continued his educational work in Sliven, later moved to Yambol and returned to Sliven.

When Russian troops arrived in Sliven in January 1878, he helped welcome them and delivered an impassioned speech in Russian.

His poetic legacy includes about twenty poems, among them Where Are You, Faithful Love of the People?, Arise, Arise, Balkan Hero, The Wind Roars and The Balkan Groans. Only three were published during his lifetime; the others survive through manuscript copies.

He also wrote textbooks on several subjects that circulated widely among his contemporaries.

His contribution to literature and education made him a symbol of the struggle for national liberation and cultural development.
