Despot Dejan Dragaš

Dejan Dragaš

Title: Despot
Accession: 1330
End of rule: 1350

Dejan Dragaš, or Dejanović, was a medieval feudal ruler, sebastokrator and despot during the reign of Tsar Stefan Dušan. He governed a domain that later became a despotate centred on Velbazhd. Dejan Dragaš was a Serbian ruler and is considered an influential figure of Stefan Dušan's time.

According to John Fine, an American medievalist, Dejan Dragaš was a Serbian ruler. He married twice, first to Vladislava and then to Theodora, sister of Tsar Stefan Dušan. He had four children from his first marriage: John, Dimitar, Theodora, who married Žarko, and Constantine. His second marriage, to Theodora, produced no children. According to various researchers, including Plamen Pavlov, the theory of Theodora-Eudokia's royal origin is disputed, and she probably came from the Bulgarian boyar class rather than the family of Stefan Dečanski and Maria Palaiologina.

It should be noted that the portrait at Zemen Monastery often associated with Despot Dejan probably depicts a namesake rather than him. This also applies to the image of the noblewoman, who is believed to be the boyar lady Doya rather than Theodora-Eudokia.
