Historical figure Chernorizets Hrabar

Chernorizets Hrabar

Chernorizets Hrabar is an enigmatic figure in medieval Bulgarian history, known principally through On the Letters. Little biographical information survives, but his name is associated with the Preslav Literary School in the late ninth and early tenth centuries.

The name is generally treated as a pseudonym. Some researchers suggest that it concealed another member of the school or even Tsar Simeon I. He is usually regarded as a monk whose religious designation and pseudonym provided his public identity. Debate continues, with theories proposing Simeon the Great and other leading figures of the period.

On the Letters is a defence of Slavic writing and language. Hrabar defends the Slavic alphabet against the influence of Greek language and writing, using historical and theological reasoning to establish the importance and equal standing of Slavic language and letters. The work helped establish Slavic as Bulgaria's official language and develop its literary tradition.

He remains significant in Bulgarian culture and education. His work continues to be studied as an important document for understanding the development of medieval Bulgarian language and culture.
