Voivode Bogdan

Voivode Bogdan
Bogdan
Bogdan Voyvoda, born in Koprivshtitsa, was one of the well-known hajduks active in the first decades of the fifteenth century, when hajduk activity played a significant role in liberation struggles. He was associated with Sredna Gora and Thrace and is considered one of the first hajduks to have operated during those years.
Bogdan Voyvoda roamed the lands around Koprivshtitsa with his band, protecting the population from Turkish bandit raids. He defended the people of Sredna Gora, who sought his protection. The mountain peaks Golyam Bogdan and Malak Bogdan were named in his honour.
Bogdan Voyvoda is considered Radan Voyvoda's successor because of his great reputation and the hajduk gathering place on Golyam Bogdan in Sredna Gora. Such places were inherited and passed from one voivode to another. In the village of Derlii, people provided shelter for him and his band.
The voivode died in an unequal battle against kardzhali raiders.
Bogdan Voyvoda is the subject of local songs and oral traditions passed down in Koprivshtitsa.
