Batbayan
Title: Kan
Accession: 665
End of rule: 668
Period: Black Bulgaria | Old Great Bulgaria
Kan Batbayan was the second and last supreme ruler of Old Great Bulgaria. He belonged to the Dulo clan and was the eldest of Kan Kubrat's five sons. During his father's lifetime, he was appointed to govern his father's tribe, the Utigurs. After Kubrat died, Batbayan became head of the tribal union. In the "Nominalia of the Bulgarian Rulers", Batbayan is mentioned under the name Bezmer. His life is considered to have ended when Old Great Bulgaria fell in 668.
Kan Batbayan's possessions in the central Caucasus now form a large region called Balkaria, a name derived from ancient Balkhara.
