Period: Ottoman rule

Atanas, also called Tanas or Acho, Lilov Piperkov was a Bulgarian revolutionary who served in Hadzhi Dimitar and Stefan Karadzha's detachment.

He was born around 1848 in Sopot. Exceptionally tall, at over two metres, he always attracted attention wherever he appeared. At only 19 years old, he joined Hadzhi Dimitar and Stefan Karadzha's detachment in 1868.

Before the Battle of Buzludzha, Tanas withdrew from the detachment and descended to Gabrovo, then hid in his hometown. After successfully crossing into Wallachia, he began working on Stefan Beron's estate.

Tragically, in 1877, Atanas Piperkov was killed by bandits. He served as the model for Acho Piperkov, a character in Ivan Vazov's Под игото (Under the Yoke).
