Árpád

Title: Kan
Accession: 895
End of rule: 907

Árpád was ruler of Kara Bulgar, or Black Bulgaria, and founder of the Árpád dynasty. In 889 he inherited power from his father Álmos and ruled jointly with Kurszán until 904. In 892, Árpád led the campaign against Great Moravia and participated in the Magyar wars on Byzantium's side in 894–896. Towards the end of the ninth century, he undertook several military campaigns against Danubian Bulgaria. These actions brought him into conflict with the young Bulgarian ruler, Tsar Simeon I.

Tsar Simeon and the Pechenegs successfully dealt a crushing blow to Kara Bulgar, resulting in the defeat of the Black Bulgars and Magyars. After this event, some of them migrated to Pannonia, where, together with the Magyars, they established the powerful Kingdom of Hungary. In 900–901, Árpád again took part in commanding Magyar troops, which decisively defeated the Principality of Lower Pannonia.
