Pottery
Period: Second Bulgarian Empire
Pottery is one of the oldest crafts in the Bulgarian lands. Potters make various ceramic vessels from clay, intended mainly for household use: cups, plates, vases, pitchers, pots, storage jars and others. The vessels are shaped on a potter’s wheel and then decorated. Decoration may be painted, applied or engraved. Painted decoration uses pigments, often with symbolic patterns characteristic of a particular region. Applied decoration is made from clay and attached after the vessel has been formed. Engraving is also carried out using the potter’s wheel, creating various designs, including waves and spirals. Master potters work in places such as Etar, Zlatograd, Old Dobrich and elsewhere.
