Hunting and fishing

Period: Prehistory

Hunting and fishing are among the oldest crafts practised by humans since the dawn of time. These ancient activities were a principal means of survival from the emergence of the first communities. For centuries, they supplied not only food but also other essential resources, including clothing and tools for various purposes.

Catching fish and hunting other animals provided essential dietary protein and also helped build community and culture.

In many societies, these activities served not only practical purposes but also as sport, recreation and even spiritual practice. Fishing is a deeply rooted tradition in Bulgaria, whose varied bodies of water, rivers, reservoirs and seacoasts offer different fishing opportunities.

Specific fishing techniques have been developed and transformed over the centuries, and many people have made fishing into a true art.

Although technology and ways of life change, hunting and fishing are still practised in many parts of the world. Population growth and pressure on ecosystems, however, have made hunting subject to legal regulation and control. This is necessary to protect wild animal populations from excessive hunting and poaching.

In Bulgarian culture, fishing is both a sporting activity and an important source of food and supplementary income for local communities.
