Gunsmithing

Gunsmithing, known as tyufekchiystvo or pushkarstvo, is a craft associated with making guns and other small arms. In Bulgaria, it also forms part of the traditional crafts passed from masters to pupils over centuries. It is distinguished by a high degree of artistry in making firearms, including guns, weapons and other artillery equipment.

Throughout their history, Bulgarians engaged in hunting and warfare, encouraging the development of gunsmithing. Master gunsmiths not only made functional weapons but also decorated their components with woodcarving, metal ornaments and other details. This made a gun not merely an effective hunting or defensive tool but also a work of art.

During the different historical periods in which Bulgarians lived under various rulers and influences, gunsmithing developed and adapted to new technologies and styles. Today, the tradition remains alive, with gunsmiths producing both traditional and modern pieces while preserving distinctive handcrafting and craftsmanship.
