Furriery

Period: Ottoman rule

Furriery is a craft concerned with working hides to create various leather and fur products, including clothing, footwear, accessories and other items. It has a long history and is an important part of traditional Bulgarian handcrafting.
During different historical periods in Bulgaria, furriers used various techniques and styles in their work. In traditional Bulgarian culture, furriery played an important role, especially in rural communities, where hide garments and other products were needed for protection against the cold and for work in the fields.
During the Middle Ages and the early periods of the Ottoman Empire, when Bulgaria was under Turkish rule, furriers continued their work, preserving traditions and adapting their techniques to new circumstances. Hide garments and accessories made by Bulgarian furriers were an important element of customary dress during this period.
During the National Revival, as Bulgaria embarked on cultural and educational development, furriery remained an important handicraft. The production of hide goods, including traditional Bulgarian hide costumes, was combined with new styles and trends.
In the modern era, furriery survives as a valued handicraft combining traditional techniques with contemporary design elements. Its masters create a variety of products that meet practical needs while also expressing artistry and style. Furriery remains an important part of Bulgarian handcrafting and cultural heritage.
