Bone and felt craftsmanship
Bone and felt craftsmanship
Period: Second Bulgarian Empire
The Bulgarians demonstrated exceptional skills in various crafts that contributed to their culture and identity. One involved making amulets, small horns and clasps from bone. These objects bear runic symbols characteristic of the Bulgars, among whom this craft was highly developed.
They also practised a distinctive craft involving the production of felt objects. This tradition survives in some parts of the country today. Felt was used to make objects such as horse saddles and collars, felt cloaks for horsemen, and even portable dwellings such as yurts. These skills reflect Bulgarian craftsmanship and innovation.
