Tsar Ivan Asen II defeats Tatar detachments
Year: 1240
Location: Hungary
Period: Second Bulgarian Empire
Ruler: Ivan Asen II
Tsar Ivan Asen II defeated Tatar detachments returning from their devastating campaign in Hungary. Under Khan Baku, a grandson of Genghis Khan, the Tatars subjugated the Volga-Kama Bulgars and other peoples living around the Volga and Kama rivers and destroyed Kievan Rus'. Only two months after the fall of Kyiv, on 15 August, they reached Hungary, where they completely defeated the royal army near the River Tisza, plundered the capital, Pest, and set it on fire. Europe was gripped by panic, but the Tatars turned east. According to a French chronicle, a Bulgarian ruler defeated them. These were probably some of the detachments that had entered Bulgarian territory.
