The Battle of Yarebichna

Year: 1918
Location: Yarebichna Peak, Republic of North Macedonia
Ruler: Ferdinand

The Battle of Yarebichna took place from 29 to 31 May 1918 at Yarebichna Peak, 1,097 metres high, in the Paiko Mountains, between Greek-French forces and Bulgarian troops. The 49th Infantry Regiment was completely destroyed: six hundred soldiers were killed and 1,712 captured. Several Bulgarian attempts to recover the lost positions failed. Bulgarian soldiers' morale on the Macedonian Front fell to its lowest point, and their fighting effectiveness declined with it. Tsar Ferdinand I directly blamed Bulgaria's German allies for the defeat, accusing them of doing nothing to support the Macedonian Front's defence. For the Entente, the victory had important propaganda value, despite costing 2,835 killed, wounded and missing against six hundred Bulgarian dead. Preparations consequently began for a major offensive along the Vardar Valley.

The battle ended in a Bulgarian defeat.
