The Battle of Varna

Year: 1201
Location: Varna
Ruler: Kaloyan

After success at Constantia, Kaloyan's army advanced towards Varna, the last Bulgarian region north of the Balkan Mountains still held by Byzantium. Mercenary garrisons defended its fortress. When Bulgarian troops arrived, they laid siege to it, taking only three days.

After entering the city, the Bulgarians crushed the remaining mercenaries. The defeated men were thrown into ditches and buried alive. This brutal act earned Kaloyan the epithet “Roman-Slayer”. Varna was liberated. A peace treaty was drawn up towards the year's end and concluded in 1202.
