The Battle of Lithosoria
Year: 773
Location: Probably near Sliven, Bulgaria
Ruler: Telerig
The Bulgarian rulers' unsuccessful campaigns in preceding years prompted the Byzantine emperor to launch another expedition into Danubian Bulgaria. The advance was halted somewhere near modern Varna, and Emperor Constantine V Kopronymos concluded a truce with Khan Telerig. A few months later, in 773 or 774, the emperor again invaded Bulgaria at Lithosoria, thought to have been somewhere around modern Sliven.
Byzantine troops surprised and routed the Bulgarian camp.
