The Battle of Constantia
Year: 1201
Location: Constantia Fortress, modern Simeonovgrad
Period: Second Bulgarian Empire
Ruler: Kaloyan
While Ivanko and Dobromir Chrysos occupied the Byzantine forces, Tsar Kaloyan planned to liberate Bulgarian lands from Byzantium. After his coalition with the two collapsed, he formed a new one with John Spyridonakes, Manuel Kamytzes and Dobromir Chrysos once again. Kaloyan had won Chrysos back after he had previously sided with Byzantium. Through their combined efforts, Kaloyan's troops invaded Thrace and reached Constantia Fortress, where the battle took place.
The fortress was captured quickly. The troops then headed towards the Byzantines' last military outpost north of the Balkan Mountains.
