The Battle of Boruy
Year: 1208
Location: Boruy, modern Stara Zagora
Period: Second Bulgarian Empire
Ruler: Boril
After Tsar Kaloyan was killed in a coup, Boril was proclaimed tsar. He began persecuting descendants of the Asen dynasty, some of whom escaped abroad, while attempting to consolidate the country. Once he judged the domestic situation sufficiently stable, he resumed operations against the Latin Empire. His troops entered Thrace and fought the Latin army at Boruy, or Beroe, modern Stara Zagora.
The Bulgarians won, and the Latin crusaders withdrew towards Plovdiv. The Bulgarians pursued them, leading to another battle.
