The Battle for Tutrakan

Year: 1916
Location: Tutrakan, Bulgaria
Ruler: Ferdinand

After 1913, Southern Dobruja was incorporated into Romania. The Tutrakan fortified area, with its large and well-armed garrison, was a pillar of Romanian defence. Its capture was assigned to the reinforced 4th Preslav Infantry Division under Major General Panteley Kiselov. The attack began early on 5 September 1916 after a powerful artillery bombardment that severely damaged the enemy fortifications. By the end of the day, Bulgarian infantry had broken through the main defensive line and entrenched itself in the captured positions. The attack resumed early the next morning, forcing the enemy units into a disorderly retreat. In the early afternoon of 6 September, the command staff also fled. The few officers remaining raised the white flag, and Bulgarian troops entered Tutrakan towards evening. The “Tutrakan Epic” opened the way to the liberation of Southern Dobruja.

The battle ended in a Bulgarian victory.
