Sicilian Normans capture Thessaloniki
Year: 1185
Location: Thessaloniki
Period: Second Bulgarian Empire
Sicilian Normans attacked and captured Thessaloniki. The city was devastated, many inhabitants were killed and thousands taken prisoner. The event was interpreted as evidence that the city's heavenly protector, St Demetrius of Thessaloniki, had withdrawn his protection. The rumour spread quickly. According to uncertain accounts, a Bulgarian fleeing the ruined city saved the saint's miracle-working icon and brought it to Tarnovo.
