Kočani massacre

Year: 1912
Location: Kočani, North Macedonia

The Kočani massacre was an attack by local Turks on the town's Bulgarian population on 19 July 1912, or 1 August in the new calendar. It followed an attack carried out that day by the Internal Macedonian-Adrianople Revolutionary Organisation. Two bombs exploded in the town's markets, killing two Bulgarians and six Turks. At least 34 Bulgarians were killed in the subsequent pogrom, and many others were wounded.

The incident provoked public outrage in Bulgaria and pressure on the government to improve the position of Bulgarians in Macedonia. The Štip massacre of November 1911 and the events in Kočani are cited as triggers for the Balkan War.
