Battle of Varna
Year: 1912
Location: Varna
Period: Third Bulgarian State
Ruler: Ferdinand
The battle was fought between Bulgarian and Ottoman warships. Following their earlier defeats at Lozengrad, Lüleburgaz and Bunarhisar, the Ottomans tried to obtain military supplies. These were loaded at the port of Constanța and shipped towards Istanbul. Meanwhile, Bulgarian ports were being bombarded. In response, when two of the ships carrying the supplies were detected, orders were given to sink them.
Bulgaria sent four ships, which succeeded in sinking all the enemy vessels. As a result of this victory, morale in the Ottoman fleet collapsed. Turkey ceased all subsequent attacks by sea.
