Battle of Tsarevets
Year: 1598
Location: Veliko Tarnovo
Period: Ottoman rule
The Battle of Tsarevets in 1598 was a successful attempt by Bulgarian insurgents to seize Tsarevets fortress during the First Tarnovo Uprising.
The uprising broke out in 1598 after Wallachian detachments defeated a local Ottoman force near Silistra. Thousands of Bulgarians joined, capturing Tarnovgrad and proclaiming the city's freedom. Despite this success, the Ottomans soon sent regular troops, which regained control of Tsarevets fortress.
This episode demonstrates the Bulgarian population's desire for liberation from Ottoman rule, as well as the difficulty of sustaining such gains against stronger Ottoman forces.
Victory for the insurgents; Todor Balina was proclaimed Prince of Bulgaria.
