Battle of Pravets

Year: 1877
Location: Pravets
Period: Ottoman rule

The Battle of Pravets took place at an important stage of the Russo-Turkish War of 1877–1878. It was part of the Russian Western Detachment's operation to drive the Ottoman Orhaniye Army from the Orhaniye plain.

In early November 1877, Mehmed Ali Pasha's Orhaniye Army was tasked with helping relieve Osman Pasha at Pleven. It planned to hold strategic positions while maintaining links with the besieged troops. Ottoman forces occupied fortified positions from Pravets through Etropole and Novachene to Arabakonak Pass.

The Russian Western Detachment decided to act against this army to weaken the Ottoman front and support the siege of Pleven.

Through a well-planned assault and use of strategic advantages, Russian troops captured key positions around neighbouring settlements and the pass. Despite their fortifications, the Ottomans could not effectively resist.

The victory weakened Ottoman forces and improved conditions for the siege of Pleven. Russian troops then continued their campaign and pursued their regional strategic objectives.
