Battle of Mečkin Kamen

Year: 1903
Location: Mečkin Kamen
Period: Ottoman rule
Ruler: Ferdinand

The Battle of Mečkin Kamen was the largest engagement of the Ilinden–Preobrazhenie Uprising and took place near Kruševo. On 3 August 1903, the so-called "Kruševo Republic" was established. On 12 August, more than ten thousand soldiers of Bakhtiar Pasha's army surrounded Kruševo. The council of voivodes decided to withdraw all the bands from the town. Voivode Pitu Guli nevertheless left the meeting and decided to resist. Thus, of the total of 1,200 insurgents in the town, only his 240 remained to defend it.

After the battle, the Turks continued to bombard Kruševo heavily. Both the bashi-bazouks and the regular army then rampaged through the town. Many local inhabitants were killed, and numerous houses were destroyed.
