Battle of Gornichevo

Year: 1916
Location: Gornichevo, Macedonia
Ruler: Ferdinand

The Battle of Gornichevo, also known as the Battle of Mala Nidže, was the first battle of the campaign known as the Monastir Offensive. At this time, the forces on the Bulgarian First Army's right flank were stationed in Macedonia. They defended a front extending over 79 kilometres, leaving the region's defences dispersed and inadequate. The Entente assigned the Serbian Third Army and the Morava Division to this operation. Its attack proceeded in two directions: towards Mala Nidže and Gornichevo, and towards Mala Reka. The Bulgarian army's defensive forces on the two fronts included only a military reserve of four and one mountain battery.

The battle lasted three days and ended in an Entente victory. The troops withdrew, leaving many casualties and weapons behind, which further weakened the Bulgarian army. After this defeat, the soldiers took up positions near Florina, and the entire right flank of the Bulgarian forces had to fall back. These actions opened the way for further Allied attacks, which developed into the Monastir offensive.
