Battle of Doiran

Battle of Doiran
The Battle of Doiran in 1918 was the third and final battle fought there during the First World War. The Bulgarian forces were commanded by Lieutenant General Vladimir Vazov and the officer Stefan Nerezov.
The Entente managed to capture only a small portion of territory on the right, thanks to the participation of Greek forces. The following day, the 65th Brigade launched an attack that brought further casualties, with only half its soldiers returning alive. Nevertheless, during the attack, the town of Doiran and several hills above it were captured. After some time, the Bulgarian fortifications ceased firing, and as the British and Greeks advanced they discovered that the Bulgarian army had abandoned them. This was because the Serbian and French armies had defeated the Bulgarian army in the Vardar valley and were also advancing towards Doiran. When the German officer overseeing the operation, Friedrich von Scholtz, learned of this, he ordered the Bulgarian army to withdraw to avoid being cut off from the flank.
