Battle of Bucharest

Battle of Bucharest
The Battle of Bucharest was an important battle for Romania during the First World War. After Romania entered the war in 1916, Bulgaria began an offensive against it from the south, while Austro-German forces attacked from the north. From the very first days of the war, during the battles of Tutrakan and Dobrich, the Romanian army suffered devastating defeats despite support from Russian units. At the Battle of Cobadin, the Bulgarian army, supported by German and Turkish troops, successfully pushed the enemy into the northern end of Dobruja and went on the defensive. Meanwhile, in the second half of November, German troops managed to cross the Carpathians and captured Craiova on 21 November 1916.
In November of that year, a new army, the Danube Army, was formed. It included units from Bulgaria, Germany and the Ottoman Empire. On 23 November, the newly formed army was ordered to begin an attack across the lands along the Danube towards Bucharest.
On 6 December, the troops entered Bucharest. The retreating Romanian and Russian soldiers were pursued by the Central Powers.
