Battle of Balkan Toresi

Year: 1912
Location: Balkan Toresi, present-day Prolezat
Ruler: Ferdinand

In early November 1912, after the successes at Lozengrad and Bunarhisar, the main forces of the Bulgarian army reached the approaches to Constantinople. Despite these successes, Edirne Fortress and the most direct railway from Bulgaria remained under Ottoman control. This created difficulties in supplying the Bulgarian troops with food and ammunition. For this reason, the High Command of the Field Army, led by Generals M. Savov and Iv. Fichev, ordered the Kardzhali Detachment, comprising two composite regiments and a brigade of the Young Turk Defence Organisation under General Nikola Genev, to advance from Kardzhali and capture Dedeagach. A railway linking Didymoteicho and Çorlu passed through the Aegean port and led towards the Bulgarian positions before Çatalca. The territories south of the Arda River were defended by the Ottoman corps under Yaver Pasha.

The battle ended in victory for Bulgaria. The Ottoman troops were finally driven out of the Eastern Rhodope Mountains.
