Battle of Apros

Year: 1206
Location: Apros
Ruler: Kaloyan

After the Battle of Rusion on 31 January 1206, the surviving Latins managed to escape from the town and sought refuge in the nearby fortress of Rodosto. On 1 February, Tsar Kaloyan decided to attack the neighbouring town of Apros (or Neapolis) as he advanced. It belonged to Theodore Branas, a Byzantine aristocrat serving the Latin Empire. The town had a substantial Greek and Latin garrison led by Bègue de Fransures, a knight and vassal of Count Louis of Blois, who had been killed at Adrianople.

During the battle, the fortress was captured and destroyed, and many knights and sergeants were killed. Bègue de Fransures, the garrison commander, was executed immediately on the orders of the Bulgarian ruler Kaloyan. All the remaining inhabitants, both Greeks and Latins, were deported to Moesia.
