Attacks in the Southwestern Balkans

Year: 837
Location: Southwestern Balkans
Ruler: Isbul

In the preceding year, the Bulgarians, led by Khan Malamir and Kavhan Isbul, entered Thrace and captured a number of fortresses, including Plovdiv. The following year, Kavhan Isbul attacked and conquered the lands of the Slavic Smolyani tribe in the Rhodope Mountains. He also conquered lands extending to Philippi, fifteen kilometres from Kavala.

Numerous Bulgarian attacks then began against Slavic territories in the southwestern Balkans.

No chronicles or records of the course of these attacks survive, but their final outcome is recorded. Most of the Slavs in Macedonia and Thrace were incorporated into the state.
