Kan Zaber

Kan Zaber
Zaber
Zaber, or Zabergan, was a Bulgar kan who ruled from around 541 to 559, and perhaps as late as 562–565. He is thought to have been kan of the Kutrigurs or Kotrags, although they may merely have been his principal strike force. Ammianus Marcellinus, a senior officer and historian who lived from around 330 to around 400, attests that the Bulgars acted together with the so-called Khons, who originated from Mount Khon or Hara. These were also members of the Bulgar Kotrag or Kutrigur clan, unambiguously called 'Bulgars' in Byzantine sources.
In 545–551, Slavs invaded south of the Danube, probably on Zabergan's orders.
In 558, Zabergan led the campaign of the Bulgar Kutrigur clan and units of Slavs dependent on the Bulgars against Constantinople. According to some sources, he also led the invasion the following year, 559, when Huns and Slavs reached 'the gates' of Constantinople.
