Kan Organa

Organa

Title: Kan
Accession: 617
End of rule: 630

Organa ruled the Utigurs from 617 to 629 or 630. He was Khan Kubrat's maternal uncle. Some scholars identify him with the regent Gostun known from the Nominalia of the Bulgarian Khans, while others regard Organa as an earlier ruler who preceded Gostun.

After Hudbard's death, the Hunnic army was led by Organa Archeanact, who served as regent while Kubrat, then a hostage in Constantinople, was still young. Information about Organa is very limited, but he is known to have been Kubrat's uncle and a member of the Dulo clan.

Organa united the Kuban Bulgar tribes into ten allied tribes called Onoguns. Although his tribes belonged to the Turkic Khaganate, he established contact with Byzantium, which was then seeking allies against the Avars, supported by the western Bulgar tribes, the Kutrigurs.

In 619, Organa arrived in Constantinople with his family and retinue and was officially received by Emperor Heraclius. He was baptised and proclaimed a patrician of Rome before returning to his homeland as Byzantium's ally against the Avars. This was probably the period when Kubrat was an honoured hostage in Constantinople. After his uncle's death, Kubrat took power in the country.
