Voivode Milan the Snake

Milan the Snake

Title: Voivode
Active from: 1907
Active until: 1908

Milan the Snake was born in Stanimaka, now part of Asenovgrad in Bulgaria. He joined the Internal Macedonian-Adrianople Revolutionary Organisation (IMARO) and became a detachment member. In August 1907, after leading figures such as Dacho Yotov and Mihail Chakov left the Veles region, the regional voivode Tane Nikolov returned and divided control of five sectors among different revolutionaries, including Milan the Snake.

The Snake was betrayed by agents of Serbian propaganda and died in a shootout with Turkish police in Veles. This occurred amid the difficult struggles and conflicts characteristic of the Macedonian-Adrianople movement, when Bulgarian revolutionaries fought for liberation from Ottoman rule while confronting rivalry and hostile actions by Serbian and Greek nationalists.
