Gostun

Title: Kan
Accession: 628
End of rule: 630

Gostun was one of the Bulgar rulers mentioned in historical sources such as the Nominalia of the Bulgarian Khans. He is identified as a 'regent' of the Ermi clan under the Avar khagan. The Russian Chronograph of 1679 mentions that the Bulgarians who arrived from the Danube appointed a prince of their own lineage named Gostomysl as their elder.

Gostun ruled for two years after Irnik and before Kurt, beginning his reign in 'dohs tvirem'. According to most modern historians, his reign fell between 628 and 630 or between 603 and 605. There is disagreement over whether these two years constituted independent or joint rule.

Some scholars identify Gostun with Organa, known from other sources as Kubrat's uncle, while others reject such a connection. According to some hypotheses, Gostun is an analogue of Gostis, the ancestor of the Czechs.
