Zli Dol Locality

Zli Dol is a historic locality near Klisura in Karlovo Municipality, Plovdiv Province, on the northern slopes of Sashtinska Sredna Gora. During the April Uprising, on 26 April, it witnessed a clash between insurgents and Turkish troops.
The feudal lord and bashi-bazouk commander Tosun Bey, acting for Karlovo, assembled 3,000 men and advanced towards Klisura. Insurgents under Nikola Karadzhov met him here. They were reinforced by the detachments of Velyo Boyadzhiev, Kuncho Kuylekov and Iliya Babanakov, sent from neighbouring Koprivshtitsa. The fighting was fierce, and Klisura was consequently subjected to looting, fire and plunder. Only one of its 1,200 houses survived.
Turkish troops under Tosun Bey killed around 400 people, mostly women and children. The surviving insurgents and their families evacuated through the Varlisnitsa Pass and reached the safety of Koprivshtitsa. This episode became a symbol of the insurgents' courage and dedication during the liberation struggle.
