Shiyakov Monastery

Shiyakov Monastery is known for its historical significance, particularly during the Bulgarian National Revival. In 1871, it witnessed an important event in the history of Bulgaria's revolutionary struggle. Vasil Levski and his associates established the Secret Revolutionary Committee there, which played an important role in preparations for the April Uprising.

The monastery is dedicated to St Michael the Archangel and lies northwest of Sofia, towards the Petrohan Pass. It is situated about 1 km beyond Kostinbrod along the Lom road and is reached by a dirt road. Various legends recount its origins: one links it with the time of Tsar Ivan Shishman, while another claims that it has existed since Byzantine times.

Today, the church is the monastery's only surviving building, with only ruins remaining of the old residential and farm buildings. The monastery is active, and visitors can visit every day. The site forms part of Bulgaria's national history and culture.
