Momini Gardi Sanctuary

In the Hisarya region of Bulgaria, north of the village of Starosel, lies the Kamenitsa cult complex, also known as Momini Skali, or Maiden's Rocks, and Momini Gardi, or Maiden's Breasts. This unique site is a broad rocky massif with varied forms, including a cave, a rock arch and artificial rock cuttings. The Bulgarian archaeologist Georgi Kitov first described the sanctuary during excavations of the Thracian mounds in the area.

In 2008, Associate Professor Ivan Hristov surveyed the site and noted stone quarries from different historical periods. Of particular interest are the forms cut into the rocks, Iron Age pottery fragments and the presence of a rock arch. Archaeologists regard rock arches as important features of the megalithic sanctuaries of ancient Thracian tribes.

The legend associated with the site tells of a young maiden who leapt from the rocks to escape pursuing Turks. This historical aspect further emphasises the complex's mystical and cultural context.
