Mogilanska Mound

Mogilanska Mound
Mogilanska Mound is a burial mound in the centre of Vratsa, Bulgaria. Excavations in 1965–1966 uncovered three stone-built tombs. One, known as Tomb No. 2, comprises an antechamber and a chamber where rich finds were discovered. A chariot and a sacrificed riding horse were found in the antechamber, the horse's harness including a complete set of silver ornaments. The chamber itself contained a burial with abundant offerings: a gold wreath, earrings, a gilded silver greave depicting the Great Mother Goddess, and a set of magical figurines, vessels and objects of silver, bronze and pottery. Some vessels bear the name of the ruler Cotys I of the Odrysian dynasty. The other two tombs had been robbed in antiquity, and only isolated objects were found in them, including a small gold jug and a small silver jug.
Prominent members of the ruling dynasty of the Triballi are thought to have been buried in these tombs during the 4th century BC. All the artefacts discovered are kept in the Regional History Museum in Vratsa.
