Mesembria Fortress

Mesembria Fortress stands in Nessebar's Old Town and is significant for both its architecture and its history. It underwent several alterations during its existence. The oldest defensive walls date from the 5th century BC, when the ancient Greeks built them entirely of stone blocks. The Romans subsequently conquered Mesembria and added to and modified its fortifications. Numerous reconstructions of the walls took place between the 6th and 14th centuries. This long span reflects not only the styles of different cultural periods but also the building techniques and requirements that changed over time. These reconstructions testify to the fortress's strategic importance in different historical eras and the constant efforts to maintain and improve its defences. Mesembria Fortress is thus both a historic artefact and an important archaeological site offering insight into the region's long and varied history.
