Kerchan Bair Locality

Kerchan Bair is the historic locality where Tanyo Voivode's detachment fought its final battle. The detachment crossed the Danube at Tutrakan on 16 May 1876, alongside Hristo Botev's detachment, which crossed at Kozloduy.
Pursued by a Turkish search party, the men reached the fateful place, and the voivode was killed in hand-to-hand fighting.

Every year from 30 May to 2 June, a four-day commemorative walk, "In the Footsteps of Tanyo Voivode's Detachment", ends at Kerchan Bair, where tribute is paid to those who died for Bulgaria's freedom. On 1 June a review of marching and drill songs is held in Popovo, with all walkers participating.
