Kalachev Bridge

Kalachev Bridge
Kalachev Bridge is an old arched stone bridge in Koprivshtitsa connecting the banks of the Byala River. It was built in 1813 with financial support from Hadzhi Nayden Kalachev, whose name it bears. Inscriptions giving the construction year and donor's name are carved on two stone slabs rising on either side. In 1913 Hadzhi Nayden Kalachev's grandson, Petar G. Kalachev, renovated it.
On 20 April 1876, at Kalachev Bridge, also known as the Bridge of the First Shot, Georgi Tihanek fired the first bullet, marking the start of the April Uprising for Bulgaria's liberation. The bridge stands at the junction of Parva Pushka, Dimcho Debelyanov, Nikola Belovezhdov and Tumangelova Cheta streets and Rayna Katsarova Road.
A relief created by architect Anastas Dudulov in 1928 stands nearby in memory of the April Uprising. It includes the names of the members of Georgi Tihanek's group and a text celebrating the events of 1876.
