Devil's Bridge

Devil's Bridge—the majestic stone guardian of the Arda

Hidden in the heart of the Eastern Rhodope Mountains, about 10 km from Ardino, lies one of Bulgaria's most mysterious and picturesque architectural treasures: Devil's Bridge. With its imposing stone arches reflected in the clear waters of the River Arda, this historic monument carries centuries of history, surrounded by legends, mysteries and unspoilt natural beauty.

History

The bridge was built in the early 16th century, between 1515 and 1518, on the orders of the Ottoman ruler Selim I. Construction was entrusted to the master builder Dimitar from the nearby town of Nedelino. There are accounts that the bridge was erected on the foundations of an older Roman bridge, part of an important road linking Plovdiv with the Aegean region.

Architecturally, the bridge impresses with its stability and harmonious proportions: 56 metres long, 12 metres high and three massive arches. Openings incorporated into the structure allow water to pass more freely during high flows, an exceptionally innovative feature for its time.

Legends

As befits a place with such a dramatic atmosphere, Devil's Bridge is associated with many legends. The best-known tells how the master builder made a pact with the Devil to construct a bridge that would never collapse. According to local belief, a devil's footprint can be seen on one of the stones, while some claim that at night the waters beneath the bridge carry sinister shadows and voices.

Status and significance

Devil's Bridge has been a cultural monument of national significance since 1984. Today, it is both a historical symbol and a favourite destination for tourists, photographers and adventurers. The path to it passes through beautiful woodland and offers unforgettable views of the Arda valley.
