Asen Dynasty Monument

Asen Dynasty Monument
The Asen Dynasty Monument, also known as the Monument to the Asen Dynasty or the Horsemen, is an imposing monument in Veliko Tarnovo dedicated to the Bulgarian tsars Asen, Peter, Kaloyan and Ivan Asen II.
This remarkable monument stands in the Boruna locality, on a rocky promontory by the River Yantra, creating the impression of a natural amphitheatre. Situated near the Boris Denev State Art Gallery and Stambolov Bridge, the monument forms part of the city's historic landscape. It was officially unveiled on 16 November 1985 to mark the 800th anniversary of the uprising led by the boyar brothers Asen and Peter and Bulgaria's liberation from Byzantine rule.
Created through donations from the Bulgarian people, the monument depicts the four Bulgarian tsars—Asen, Peter, Kaloyan and Ivan Asen II—on horseback. Their individual representations are elegantly executed, with each figure conveying the reign and contribution of the respective monarch to Bulgaria. Unfortunately, a few years after its unveiling, the monument was found to be suffering from deformation and structural problems. Its significance in Bulgarian history, however, continues to attract tourists and history enthusiasts.
