Independence

At noon on 22 September 1908, Prince Ferdinand I proclaimed the Principality of Bulgaria an independent kingdom. He also proclaimed himself “Tsar of the Bulgarians”. This took place in the Church of the Holy Forty Martyrs in the presence of the people of Tarnovo, clergy and the ministers of the government led by Prime Minister Aleksandar Malinov.
